1864 American Flag Found in Closet
HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. A 36-star American flag has been unfurled at a Livingston County museum in Hartland Township. The Hartland Area Historical Society recently found the flag, which would have been flown shortly after Nevada became a state in 1864. Collections chairwoman Nadine Cloutier told The Detroit News on Monday that it was rolled up in a sheet inside a broom closet at the Florence B. Dearing Museum. The flag is one of the first artifacts donated to the museum in 1958 by resident Mae Dexter. It will cost about $8,000 to restore and mount, Cloutier said. .
China says latest bird flu outbreak under control
The first bird flu outbreak in the country since September came about a month after the virus killed a 24-year-old man in the eastern province of Jiangsu. Xinhua cited an unnamed official as blaming a warmer winter for bringing in more migratory birds to the area near Turpan, and so "increasing the chances of bird flu outbreaks". "This has added to infection risks and made the control of the disease more difficult." With the world's biggest poultry population and hundreds of millions of farmers raising birds in their backyards, China is seen as crucial in the global fight against bird flu. The Agriculture Ministry has warned of a "very high" possibility of bird flu outbreaks in the country over the winter and spring, when the virus is at its most contagious.
