Authorities investigate health plan covering 25,000 Missourians
WellCare Health Plans, which insures more than 7,600 Missourians under Medicaid through an affiliate, has come under intense scrutiny following an Oct. 24 raid on its Tampa, Fla., headquarters by federal and state authorities. WellCare has a total of about 2.3 million Medicare and Medicaid enrollees across the nation. Medicare programs serve the elderly, and Medicaid serves mainly low-income Americans. WellCare also serves about 18,000 Missourians through its Medicare prescription drug plan, and a small number of Missourians -- about 50 -- through its WellCare Medicare Advantage Plan, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services acting branch manager Kane Kunard. WellCare's Harmony Health Plan Inc. division's Medicaid contract with the state of Missouri runs through June 30, 2008.

Federal regulators said Monday that they are conducting a six-month review of the muscle and joint pain found in people who take osteoporosis drugs such as Procter & Gamble's Actonel and Merck & Co.'s Fosamax. The Food and Drug Administration revealed the review on the same day that it reminded doctors and patients that the drugs can cause extreme pain. Labeling for the drugs, called bisphosphonates, already mentions bone, joint and muscle pain associated with the drugs, which can become debilitating at times. Despite that labeling, the agency said doctors fail to recognize the pain as a side effect and instead prescribe painkillers to treat it. The regulators hope to find out why only some patients experience pain when using the drugs and why some even continue to suffer after they stop taking the medications.
